Nature & the Wreck

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 7:54 PM
Finally after 20 months I got my fucking settlement.
It was a bit much realising it was over. We had beer at the shop. I rang Richard and shared the moment with him.
It was the right amount so I said yes.
Everything seems easier and brighter now.
I can continue to make stupid, funny things that amuse me and not worry if they sell or not.

If you have been reading my blog or my life you might understand what I have been through. It was a journey to hell.

I will never get over seeing my work ripped to shit by firemen with pick axes.
-it's an insurance job mate
-what?
-we are going to gut this place

The shop looks pretty and clean again but that took forever. It still doesn't feel entirely 'corky' again. The old shop was kind 'whatever + beautiful + interesting'. Every part of was so 'worked out' and natural it always felt nice walking around. Guess it'll take time to make it feel like that again.

It was a pretty awesome day. Louis designed some elegant packaging that looked better than anything I could have done - a gatefold jewellery card with an arch cut into it that forms a jewellery stand when folded in reverse.

And this tee shirt came back from the screen printers. It's the best tee I have ever designed and it took a million years of production work to get the pattern working *sigh*

rainbow hippy

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 4:34 PM
so this the most hippy necklace - an amethyst, with a silver 'manifest' tag adn a rainbow heart. am currently reading joseph campbell's 'journey with a thousand faces' which constantly reinforces the totemic value of amulet-style necklaces that heroes need to cross spirit lands.

Notes from my travels

  • Nov. 15th, 2009 at 6:49 AM
Firstly I want you to see what life is like when you are using an azerty keyboard as opposed to a traditional qwerty keyboard.

"The rqin in spqin fqlls ,qinluy on the plqins. Hoz noz brozn coz."

So please forgive my spelling. The dislocation of even a few letters wreaks havoc on the handeye coordination of a touch typist.

I am writing this from a hotel lobby on the Ile De La Reunion. The civilised cousin of Mauritius. It is a volcanic island, meaning it rose from the ocean millions of years ago as a result of the qctivity of a giant spewing lavahole. A lavahole which is still there, and still active today. A reassuring thought.

Anyways so far I have not seen much except for the Indian ocean, which i stared at for approximately eight hours straight on the plane on the way here. But having met some of the people I have to say that I do miss the Australian dedication to quality of service. Not to insult the people or anything but the people here are so laid back, it sometimes comes across as lazyness. But I supose thats the price one pays for living in paradise. Why stress?

Last night, a busload of tired tourists (myself among them) who had braved the 13 hour flight to reunion and then had to wait an hour for the shuttle bus to the hotel to finally take off broke into a round of applause when the bus finally did get going. I am not sure the driver was particularly flattered by this gesture. The notable exception is the hotel staff here, who are about as helpful as anywhere else in the world.

The weather is nice, warm and a little humid.

What can I say? I'm weak

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 7:01 PM
Godard's Week-end really does leave itself open to a bevy of pretentious freshman games.

The first page is blank, drawing attention to the artificial creation of demand and the expectation that created demand means that the demand will be satisfied.

Then, there's a ritualized paper, devoid of meaning- Thesis, Supporting Argument x3, Conclusion.

The title is "Godard's - Marxism - Weekend" repeated several times.

The first page and a half is nothing but erotic metaphors and sexually-charged words describing Marx's theories.

The word "spectacle" has been replaced by a flashing French flag.

The quote "I am here to proclaim to these modern times the end of the grammatical era and the beginning of an age of flamboyance in every field" has had its vowels removed and replaced with icons of lilies.

The footnotes include a detailed set of instructions for printing the paper.

There's a tangent on the true cost of writing the paper.

The professor is invited to participate in the production of the sentence: "The oppressed-"

More ideas? This is only going to work if it's absolutely absurd.

And yes, I've submitted a real copy of the paper. I don't hate my grade that much. I'm just sleep-deprived.

So strong you thump O terrible drums

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 4:46 PM
One more racist comment, and then I promise I'm done for the day.

Stupid Native American culture fest on campus has forced me to look up the spelling of "ululating."

I can't tell whether they're singing "The Happy Sun Song" or "The Trail of Tears Song" or the "I Got Fucked By Grandmother Porcupine Song."

They won't stop.

And the drums. Constant drumming. Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of /headdesk echoing through the library. There's no escape.

On the bright side, it's put me in the perfect mood to write my New Wave paper.

Train Wreck

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 11:48 AM
No, really.

I've been stuck on the train for the past few hours as they tried to extricate the truck from the train car. It hit right under my window, but of course I was reading and didn't see it till I heard the metal ripping and my window falling out.

Three people claimed to have whiplash. All of them were joking about it before the police/fire department/ambulances arrived. It's weird how the truck hit the only three black people on the train and no one else. Chevrolet is clearly racist.

The kitchen gods are displeased

I arrived home tonight to find that an unopened jar of pesto had inexplicably exploded in my pantry. I will never be able to get this odor out.

It's my own damn fault for not making my own pesto.

Additions and improvements for Paid Feature

  • Nov. 12th, 2009 at 2:11 PM
We've made some additions and improvements to Notes!

The Notes feature has been added to two action-taking pages:
  • You can now add a Note directly on the Add a friend page - handy if you'd like to mark down where you met them or another name you know them by!
  • On the Ban and unban users page (under Account -> Privacy) you can now add a Note, including to a group of users all banned at the same time (so that next year you won't need to ask yourself "hey, why did I ban these guys?")

Other changes:
  • When you're viewing your existing Notes they're grayed out; click in a field to activate it to change the text (this page can be found from the header by using Profile -> Manage Notes)
  • Changes to editing:
    • When you're going to create a new Note but one already exists, you'll get a warning that you're editing an existing Note
    • You can now delete a note from the "Edit note" pop-up in the hover menu
    • You can now delete notes for multiple selected users on the Manage notes page
    • When you change Notes on "Ban|unban users" page, they can be edited and saved with "Save Changes" button
